Active Aging Week caps September with
opportunities for older adults...Locations
across the country offer free, fun
activities September 24 through October 1
[August
29, 2007] What is the secret to staying
healthy and enjoying the years of your life?
For most of us, the key is to Choose an
Active Life. There will be plenty of
opportunities for older adults to find
activities that benefit their health and
well-being during Active Aging Week, which
takes place Monday, September 24 through
Monday, October 1 (International Day of
Older Persons).
Seniors centers, retirement communities,
health clubs, parks and recreation
departments and aging services providers
will host a variety of free activities,
including group walks (both strolls and
faster paced), exercise classes, dances,
health lectures and demonstrations, and
previews of upcoming activities, such as a
class on preventing falls.
You can find a list of locations where
Active Aging Week events are taking place by
visiting the Consumer section of the
International Council on Active Aging by web
site at
www.icaa.cc/aaw.htm.
In your community, look for announcements,
posters and fliers about the week’s events.
Active Aging Week presentations are a great
way to learn something new, meet people,
spend time with friends and find out what’s
available in the community.
What sets apart Active Aging Week?
Everything is free to the public, and the
emphasis is on fun and education. Older
adults can go at their own pace, look for
activities that appeal to them, and try
something new. The goal of Active Aging Week
is to give as many older adults as possible
the means to experience activities and
exercise in a safe, friendly and fun
atmosphere.
“Active aging begins with individual
choice,” commented Colin Milner, CEO of
International Council on Active Aging (ICAA).
“This year’s theme of ‘Choose an active
life’ is a reminder that we have the ability
to feel well and maintain our mobility.
Physical activity helps us do that—whether
it’s a walk around the block, going to a
dance or digging in the garden.”
Choose an active life. Look for an Active
Aging Week event in your community during
the week of September 24 to October 1.
