RX
Rights Coalition issues statement on 60
Minutes Show about Counterfeit Medicines,
decries lack of attention to Pharma's
pricing practices
Lee Gracyzk, Executive
Director of the
RxRights
Coalition, a consumer-based advocacy
group working for America's Access to Safe
Affordable Medicines, has issued the
following statement:
"The
recent CBS '60 Minutes' show on the
dangers of counterfeit drugs being sent
into this country: clearly identified
the risks to our nation’s health created
by those operations, which are illegal
even in their own countries.
"It
was encouraging to note that the
program recognized that there are
legitimate sources of prescription drugs
beyond our borders from countries whose
standards of oversight meet or exceed
our own and that many times bogus
pharmacies attempt to deceive the public
by masquerading as pharmacies from such
countries.
"It
was regrettable that the program did not
provide consumer with the tools to
distinguish between legitimate and
illegitimate sources of personal
prescription drug importation. The
programs’ biggest shortcoming, however,
was in failing to fully examine why
Americans fall prey to bogus products
and pharmacies – namely the high cost of
prescription drugs! "
