Stage, screen
and film actress Delta Burke launches campaign
to share the latest news about managing diabetes
March 2007 (Medialink) --
Did you know that type 2 diabetes is
increasingly common and accounts for most of the
20 million Americans with the disease? Family
history is not the only risk factor; lifestyle
habits such as physical inactivity and diet play
a part in prevention and treatment. Delta Burke,
famous for her lead role in "Designing Women"
and recently seen on ABC's "Boston Legal," has
lived with type 2 diabetes for nearly 10 years.
Now, she's teaming up with a new campaign called
Let's Talk to share her personal experience and
bring awareness about coping with the disease.
As part of the campaign,
Ms. Burke will be partnering with certified
diabetes educator Virginia Valentine to help
educate people with type 2 diabetes about the
importance of leading a healthy, active
lifestyle and talking with your doctor about
treatment options.
This summer, Ms. Burke will
be traveling to different cities across the
United States to talk with people with type 2
diabetes and share the latest news about
managing the disease.
Delta Burke is best known
for her portrayal as Suzanne Sugarbaker in the
CBS series "Designing Women," which ran for five
seasons and earned her two Emmy Award
nominations for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
Recently, she has been busy working on a number
of television, film and theater projects, having
recently appeared as "Mrs. Claus" in the NBC
movie The Year Without a Santa Claus opposite
John Goodman. Delta is currently appearing on
ABC's Boston Legal and will appear in Executive
Producer David E. Kelley's new Fox television
show The Wedding Planners.
Virginia Valentine, CNS,
BC-ADM, CDE, has been helping people manage
their diabetes for more than 20 years. She is
currently the co-owner and CEO of the Diabetes
Network, Inc., an American Diabetes
Association-recognized disease management
company. In 1999, Ms. Valentine was awarded the
Roche/Zitter Diabetes Management Award, and she
is a past recipient of the Outstanding Diabetes
Educator of the Year award from the American
Association of Diabetes Educators.
