Take the
itch and burn out of hemorrhoids: Tips to
reduce pain and discomfort
Newswise — Are you
tired of the itch and burn of hemorrhoids?
While it’s a fairly common condition, many
patients may be too embarrassed to talk to
their doctor about it.
Hemorrhoids are masses
of swollen veins in the lower rectum or at
the anus. The condition develops from
increased pressure in the veins in the lower
rectum most often caused by straining to
have a bowel movement. Hemorrhoids
frequently develop in women during pregnancy
when the presence of the fetus causes
increased pressure on the rectal area.
The most common signs
of internal hemorrhoids are traces of bright
red blood on toilet paper and in the toilet
bowl. Burning, discomfort, and itching may
result if external hemorrhoids become
irritated. Other common causes of
hemorrhoids include chronic constipation,
diarrhea, obesity, and sitting on the toilet
for a long time.
Never assume rectal
bleeding is from hemorrhoids. See your
doctor to rule out cancer or other disease.
