Every tax season gives rise to a
variety of tax scams. Some
people have gotten e-mails from a non-IRS source saying they are under
audit and need to fill out a questionnaire within 48 hours to avoid
penalties and interest. Recipients are then asked for their Social
Security number and bank account numbers.
The IRS doesn’t notify taxpayers of
pending audits by way of e-mail, nor do they conduct e-mail audits, the
story warned.
Another scam is fake IRS agents coming
to your home to collect. IRS special agents, field auditors and
collection officers all carry photo IDs and will normally contact you
before they visit. But if you have questions, call the Treasury
Inspector General’s Hotline at (800) 366-4484
