With 80 Percent of Care Provided by Family
Caregivers,
How do Family Members Cope?
Geriatric Care Manager discusses how to
balance
needs of family while caring for aging
parents
Stress on caregivers: 34 million adults
provide care to a relative/friend over
50 years of age
Demographic shift: Aging of 73 million
Baby Boomers to take toll
Time pressures: 1 in 5 provide 40 hours
a week or more of care
Especially
during the summer months, caregivers for aging relatives often feel
overwhelmed.
Children are home from school and caregivers have to find a healthy
balance between entertaining the kids and
caring for older relatives.
Professional geriatric care managers can help family caregivers with
the endless demands on their time and
attention.
They can assess the needs of senior family members and recommend
appropriate, cost-effective resources and
support.
Monika White, president of the National
Association of Professional Geriatric Care
Managers (NAPGCM), talks about how
professional geriatric care managers can
help families monitor an aging relative and
offer guidance when caregivers need time
off.
She also sheds light on the difference
between a geriatric care manager certified
by the NAPGCM and an uncertified geriatric
care manager.
