Stabenow
and Johnson lauded by Disabled Veterans
for Veterans Health Care Amendment to Defense Bill
W ASHINGTON, July 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Disabled American
Veterans (DAV) commends Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Tim
Johnson
(D-S.D.) for sponsoring an amendment to the Department of
Defense authorization bill that would guarantee a reliable, stable
funding stream for veterans' health care.
The amendment to S. 1042 calls for a fundamental change in
the way our government funds the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
medical care system. "This shift in VA health care funding would
guarantee adequate resources to care for sick and disabled
veterans," said DAV National Commander James E. Sursely.
"Skyrocketing medical costs, decades of inadequate funding,
and rising demand for medical services have severely hampered timely
access to quality health care for our nation's sick and disabled
veterans," Commander Sursely said.
"When the VA revealed last month that it faces a serious
funding shortfall, Republicans and Democrats alike called for
immediate action to correct the problem," said Sursely. "In
supporting the amendment offered by Senators Stabenow and Johnson,
lawmakers can take a significant step forward on the vital issue of
veterans health care."
"Assuring a reliable funding stream for veterans health care
would eliminate the year-to-year uncertainty about funding levels
that has prevented the VA from being able to adequately plan for and
meet the growing needs of veterans seeking treatment," Commander
Sursely said.
"It is crucial that guaranteed funding legislation be enacted
this year to ensure that all eligible veterans -- including those
injured in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the war on terror -- have access
to timely, quality health care," said Commander Sursely.
