Millions of taxpayers nationwide can
electronically prepare and file their taxes
this year at no charge thanks to the
IRS...ever said "the best things in life are
free" may have been right.
However, beginning in mid-January, 95
million taxpayers will have access to a
completely free service from the IRS that
helps them electronically prepare and file
their federal taxes.
The service is called Free File. All you
need to qualify is an adjusted gross income
of $54,000 or less in 2007.
Free File is offered by the Internal Revenue
Service in partnership with the Free File
Alliance, LLC.
The Alliance is a group of industry leading
private-sector tax preparation companies.
The program was launched in 2003, and 19
million people have already taken advantage
of it.
So, forget about those long paper forms,
with Free File, there's less chance for
making errors and you'll get your refund in
half the time. To access Free File go to
www.irs.gov. It's available 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, beginning mid-January 2008.
Free File is available in English and
Spanish.

R. Williams, Director, Electronic Tax
Administration and Refundable Credits
As Director, David Williams is leading the
effort to redefine the IRS's entire approach
to electronic interactions with taxpayers
and tax practitioners.
Most recently, David served as the Director
of Earned Income and Health Coverage Tax
Credits and the Telephone Excise Tax Refund
programs. From 1998-2003, David was the
Internal Revenue Service Chief,
Communications and Liaison.
He helped guide IRS strategic management in
the formulation of tax administration
policy, development of long-range
organization objectives and implementation
of internal business process reforms.
Prior to joining the IRS in 1998, David was
the Deputy Assistant Secretary for
Legislative Affairs – Tax and Budget.
From 1996 to 1997, he was Legislative
Director and tax policy advisor to U.S.
Senator Bill Bradley. From 1990 to 1996, he
was Assistant Staff Director – Revenues and
Natural Resources for the U.S. Senate
Committee on the Budget for the Department
of Treasury.
