Ending Elder Abuse is Topic of Seminar Hosted by Congress of California Seniors

May 23, 2012 -- Finding ways to end elder abuse was the theme of a free seminar sponsored by the Congress of California Seniors Region 3 at the St. Regis Retirement Center, 23950 Mission Blvd., in Hayward in May.

"Our senior community is growing and elder abuse is on the rise," said Karen Anderson, Chairperson. "It is critical that we discuss, learn about and create solutions to identify and prevent elder abuse."

The luncheon featured two guest speakers who spoke on "Planning with Purpose: Commitment to End Abuse of Seniors and Elders."

Jill Nielsen, LCSW, is Adult Protective Services Supervisor with the Department of Adult, Aging and Medi-Cal Services in Alameda County. She is passionate about protecting vulnerable elders and disabled adults.

Julie Batz is one of the elder abuse attorneys for Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS). She represents Alameda County seniors in court to obtain Elder Abuse Restraining Orders. She also assists seniors in their consumer issues, specifically educating and handling illegitimate debt issues.

The Congress of California Seniors has been a strong voice for millions of California seniors, their families and their communities. Region 3 represents Alameda and Contra Costa counties. For more information about the group, go to www.seniors.org
