Pennsylvania Hospital offers free Prostate
Cancer Screening, Tuesday, September 16,
3:30 to 7:30 p.m....September is Prostate
Cancer Awareness Month
WHAT: You can save your life with a
prostate-cancer check this fall. The Joan
Karnell Cancer Center at Pennsylvania
Hospital will offer free prostate cancer
screenings for men between the ages of 40
and 75 on Tuesday, September 16, from 3:30
to 7:30 p.m. at its offices on Washington
Square.
Screenings will consist of a digital rectal
examination and prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
blood test. Appointments are necessary.
WHEN: Tuesday, September 16, 3:30-7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Joan Karnell Cancer Center, Farm
Journal Building, 2nd floor, 230 W.
Washington Square
WHY: The best prevention for advanced
prostate cancer is early detection. Symptoms
of prostate cancer may not be obvious until
the disease is advanced. Men with a family
history of prostate cancer and men of
African-American descent are at higher risk
than other men and should be screened
annually beginning at age 40. Experts from
the Joan Karnell Cancer Center offer the
following additional tips to help beat the
odds of an advanced prostate-cancer
diagnosis:
• Schedule a screening: Your chances of
survival increase with early diagnosis.
• Get a woman on the case: As many as 60
percent of men screened say that their
wives, girlfriends or another female
encouraged them to get screened.
• Watch your diet: Supplements and food
sources rich in anti-oxidants (vitamin E and
selenium) have shown to control cell damage
and may prevent prostate cancer.
• Start moving: A healthy exercise program
will increase circulation, lower stress and
may decrease levels of prostate-stimulating
androgens.
• Research your risk: The more you know and
the earlier you know it, the more control
you have over your outcome. Read, ask others
and go on-line to educate yourself about
prostate cancer.
