Retired
Marine who works with
High School ROTC team honored
for achievements
Editor's Note: While doing some
work on behalf of The Montford Point Marines Association, an
organization saluting the nation's first African-American Marines, I had
the pleasure of meeting Sgt. Joe Wilkins.
Like other Marines (I have been
reminded that you are always a Marine) Joe had a rightful pride in his
contributions as a Marine and he worked hard at Cleveland High School to
instill that pride and discipline in the school's ROTC drill team.
I can still remember the pride of the
team members and Joe when they presented the colors at the Association's
banquet in St. Louis, at which the then-Commandant Jones was the honored
guest and speaker.
Now, Joe's contributions have been
rewarded with his selection as one of the recipients of the Outstanding
Teacher of the Year award for St. Louis (MO) public schools.
Joe credits his award to his friends,
especially wife, Denise, and all who have supported his
work. But, we believe it is also a fitting tribute to an
extraordinary man and Marine.
