-- S. John Sisler of Groveland, Ill., was elected today as national
commander of AMVETS (American Veterans) at the organization's 59th
national convention in Orlando, Fla.
Sister, a life member of Illinois Post
169 in North Pekin, Ill., has held leadership positions on all levels of
AMVETS. Prior to his election, he served as first vice commander for
membership, as second vice commander for programs and as National
District IV commander.
He has been equally active on the
state level, serving as a four-time post commander, division commander,
state commander and member of the National Executive Committee.
The U.S. Army Vietnam veteran served
in the 17th Cavalry of the 116th Light Infantry Brigade, and was
honorably discharged as a sergeant E-5.
Sisler devotes much of his free time
to the Quincy Veterans Home in Quincy, Ill. where he volunteers at
events organized for veterans.
An employee of Caterpillar, Inc. in
Peoria, Ill., for 37 years, Sisler begins his term as national commander
on September 1.
"Together, we can make a
difference, Sisler said,"If we continue to stay involved, not only
on the national level, but also on the local level, we can truly have an
impact in the veterans community."
He and his wife Susan, a past national
president of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, have two sons-Joshua, who is a
member of the Sons of AMVETS, and Benjamin, who is a member of the
Junior AMVETS.
A leader since 1944 in preserving the
freedoms secured by America's Armed Forces, AMVETS provides, not only
support for veterans and the active military in procuring their earned
entitlements, but also community services that enhance the quality of
life for the nation's citizens. |
