‘Phantom of the Opera’ continues

The magic of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ never
seems to fade. In what is undoubtedly the
hallmark of the fabulous career or Andrew
Lloyd Weber, a rare combination of romance,
excitement, humor, elaborate production and
intrigue are brought together to provide
what has become for untold numbers of
people, a lifetime theatrical experience.
It never tires.
And that is undoubtedly the reason that
‘Phantom’ is making its sixth appearance at
The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis. And,
this is truly one of the outstanding
productions of the series, aided, as always
by the richness of the Fox with its
elaborate setting that is missing in so many
‘modern’ more sterile venues.
The story is by this time well-known to even
the most casual attendee. The facially
disfigured Phantom with the deep love for
the beautiful Christine.
The attraction
that actually begins to develop by Christine
as she struggles with her own fears and
darkness of her life. Raoul, as the
handsome suitor who reclaims her from the
Phantom. The supreme sacrifice that the
Phantom chooses to make when his last chance
at loving and being loved is denied. And,
finally, the return of the now-elderly Raoul
to the decrepit theater where a small music
box is auctioned and is nothing more than a
token from the past.
But, the drama remains, and the current
production at The Fabulous Fox is
perfection.
The set is breathtaking with the detailed
costumes to the magnificent beaded
chandelier. Tim Martin Gleason does a
superb job playing the Phantom. When he
sings " Music of the Night " you can feel
the passion.
The voice of Trista Moldovan ( Christine )
was absolutely beautiful. Kim Stengel was
dynamite in her role of Carlotta. Sean
MacLaughlin was fantastic as Raoul. You
could feel the electricity between him and
Christine. It was truly a phenomenal
performance. All of the cast and crew were
spot on.
Admittedly, a lot of superlatives—but all
well deserved. It's clear to see why The
Phantom of the Opera is the longest running
show in Broadway history. Everyone has to
see this show at least once..or again…and
again. It runs Sept 30th-Oct. 25th at The
Fabulous Fox Theatre.
