and especially an option for downtown visitors

St. Louis is a city with many facets,
most notably its strong neighborhood association. That's part of the
charm of the renovated Skip's Place Too, located at 4401 South Broadway,
at the exit of I-55 South and Broadway.
But, in addition to its well-maintained
older look, complete with a tin-plate ceiling, and warm, comfortable
dining rooms, Skip's Place Too has other things to offer.
First is that this family-oriented
restaurant has some of the best food we've eaten in more-than-sufficient quantities at
a highly reasonable cost. Next is that, especially for families, it
offers an alternative for family visitors to downtown events, freeing them
from the high prices of many downtown establishments or the raucous and
noisy bars that seem to be more interested in the singles crowd between
near-legal drinking age and under 35. (It's only a few miles
from downtown.)
In short, Skip's Place Too is a neighborhood bistro, featuring outstanding food,
but also a friendliness typified by owner Skip Cobb.
Skip is a South St. Louis legend.
Why not? He is a former policemen whose undercover work was the
inspiration for a movie starring Charlie Sheen. He's a small man,
but built solidly like we expect a cop to be. He formerly
owned a smaller bar, Skips, which was more of a tavern than a restaurant,
where he set strict rules of conduct.
He is recognizable by two
features: a head of white hair that is always immaculately combed,
and his shorts. That's right, shorts. Even when it is snowing
and zero, Skip always wears dress shorts.
Now that he has sold the original
Skip's,
he is able to devote his time to Skips Place Too.
The first thing that one notices when
entering Skip's Place Too is the ample and attractive layout of space. The large bar is in an area
that also has stools and tables for those who choose to eat in the bar
area. For others, two large dining rooms are available.
We have eaten many times at Skip's Place
Too, and
have never had a bad meal. We believe that his Chicken Fried Steak is
absolutely the best we have ever enjoyed. Now, Skip is expanding his
services, brining on an authentic Canjun chef to prepare, not just hot
foods, which many people confuse Canjun cooking with, but authentic
selections that emphasize both the rich flavors and heritage of Bayou
food.
Skip is continuously improving the
facility, all the time restoring the warm design of a bygone ear, complete
with old brick walls, fireplace, tin ceiling and rough-sawn wood
throughout. He is also active in a number of neighborhood
activities, such as featuring a children's choir singing Christmas Carols
during the Holiday season.
If you want to enjoy the uniqueness of
the quality neighborhoods that make St. Louis such a unique city--plus
some great food and friendly atmosphere in a Bistro-like setting--make
Skip's Place Too a part of your St. Louis dining experience. |
