Galena visit too short, prompts plans for return

Historic Galena touts itself as 'where you ought to be.'  This is  not a grandiose claim by this small Northern Illinois community, but a statement of fact based upon its reputation as a favorite travel destination for thousands of travelers.

Galena is located near the tri-state region in the corner of Illinois-Iowa=Wisconsin.  It is snuggled in a picturesque setting that is reminiscent of European villages, with wonderful Civil War Era houses and shops dotting the surrounding hills and lining Main Street.

It is also the home of General Grant.  After the Civil War, the grateful citizens of Grant donated the home to the Civil War hero.  He only lived in it for a few years before being elected President and moving to Washington and then New York.  As a result, the home features authentic furnishing in pristine condition.

After our tour of Grant's Home, we visited the Galena Cellars wine shop on Main Street. Located in a restored old brick building, the shop features the entire line of the award-winning wines of this popular winery, as well as a gift shop stocked with some of the most outstanding wine accessories we have seen.  (Click here to read our review of some of Galena Cellars' wines).

This was followed by visits to some of the outstanding boutiques and gift shops that are found on Main Street, including cheese shops, a store featuring Christmas items and a beautiful flora shop.  For extra kicks, we made a stop at a 'second hand' store that was loaded with items.

We were limited by time, but spent a part of the afternoon taking a driving tour of the village to pinpoint places for our next planned visit, hopefully the sooner the better. After all, Galena is truly 'where you belong.'
